Concert Flashback

Styx, Walter Egan, Christian Friday

May 5, 1977 @ Rialto Theatre

By Brian Carlson

This was my first concert. My parents wouldn't let me go to Chicago! They were responsible and I was 12. Go figure!

Christian Friday played first. They were a very good local band, and not Christian rock. I don't even know if they were signed to a label. If anyone knows of Christian Friday let me know on the message board.

Walter Egan was on next. This was a year before Magnet and Steel came out. There was nothing memorable about the playing or songwriting from him or his band. I do remember a song called "When It's All Said and Done (I Think I'd Rather Have Fun)."

Throughout all of this the smell of certain smoking materials was in the air. It was a concert in the '70s after all. This went with the territory. We suffered through Walter Egan to see Styx.

Speaking of lighting up going on, "Light Up" was Styx's first song. The lights went out and a curtain of the Chicago skyline opened to show the band in all its glory with the mirror balls shooting dots of light all over the theater.

Here's the setlist, as I remember it:

Light Up

Lady

Lorelei

Crystal Ball

Can't Wait

Come Sail Away

Suite Madame Blue

Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man)

Miss America

The Grand Illusion

Midnight Ride

X

Styx's album, The Grand Illusion, came out two months later so I think this concert was a warm-up. Three bands for $6.50. Styx alone was worth the admission price. A great band playing its best material. You can't ask for more than that!

Photo Spotlight

Eddy Clearwater

May 11, 2005 @ Buddy Guy's Legends

By Sean Birmingham

Zo

The Chicago blues community came together for a birthday tribute to Otis Rush, who had recently suffered a stroke which had kept him from performing. Since Rush was one of my "Big Three" Chicago blues artists I made every effort to see (the others were Son Seals and Magic Slim), I made my way to Legends on that Wednesday night in 2005. I got a spot on the floor by the pool tables. I had my camera with me, but I did not have a clear shot. The crowd was very respectful of others as were those with cameras. I was able to move close and take a few photos of each artist. It was a who's who of Chicago blues.

X

Here was the lineup, in order:

X

Carlos Johnson

Jimmy Johnson

Jody Williams

Billy Boy Arnold

Eddy Clearwater

Ronnie Baker Brooks

Lonnie Brooks

Buddy Guy

Carl Weathersby

Nellie Travis

Otis Clay

Syl Johnson

Phil Guy

Sharon Lewis (backed by Carlos Johnson, Chico Banks, Billy Branch, Big James Montgomery and Linsey Alexander)

X

I do not recall when they took a break, but I remember enjoying the second set more than the first. Everyone was great and paid respect to Rush, who was in the house. I recall really enjoying Syl Johnson and Phil Guy. I looked back over my notes from the show, and I just wrote "see photos" and "one of the ages." Rush wanted to thank the crowd for being there to celebrate his birthday, but it was very difficult for him to muster up his famous line of "EVERYONE SAY YEAH...EVERYONE SAY HELL YEAH!!!"
